Kane Dusts Field at Sr. Open Qualifying

Jim Kane, 50 of Edmond, OK fired a 6-under par 65 to win sectional qualifying for the U.S. Senior Open Championship by four shots. Finishing second behind Kane and earning the first alternate position was Matt Seitz, 50 of Hutchinson, who shot a 2-under par 69. Gary McClure, 58 of Independence birdied the 188 yard par 3 No. 2 to win the play-off for the second alternate position over Andy Smith, 53 of Gladstone. Both McClue and Smith shot 1-over par 72. Smith an amateur earned the honor as Low Amateur; an honor the USGA has made a celebrated tradition.

Kane, formerly the Director of Golf at Eagle Bend Golf Club in Lawrence started his round by three putting for par on the 538 yard No. 1. Unbelievable, Kane told officials that the three putt on the first hole was typical of his long putting lately. Fortunately for Kane, he did not have many long putts in route to his six birdies and no bogey round. Kane will join 156 other senior golfers in Colorado Springs at the Broadmoor, July 31-August 3.  The 2008 Senior Open Championship will be the fourth major championship for Kane.  Previously he has played in the U..S. Open and two PGA Championship. His best finsih was in the 1992 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach when he tied for 23rd.
