For Tom Leonard of Leawood to have
the low score in his pairing group today was a feat. Leonard's
2-under par 70 was good enough to edge out playing partners Gary
Noble's and Ron Eilers' 1-over par 73 for low honors in the group and
the Senior Open Division field today at the StateLine Amateur Tour event at
Falcon Ridge Golf Club. Leonard carded a 3-under par 33 on the
front nine to get himself off to a great start. Noble had an up and down day which
included two eagles, three birdies, four bogeys, and a quadruple
bogey on the 10th hole. Noble eagled the par 5 499 yard 6th hole and the par 5
517 yard 17th hole en route to his bizarre round. "All three
of us fed off each other today. When Tom would make a birdie
it seemed as if Gary or I would pick one up on the next hole",
stated Eilers after his round.
In the Open Division Jon Platz of
Olathe and Tour newcomer Jay Kramer of Lenexa finished at 1-under
par 71 to tie for top honors. The long hitting Platz had two
birdies on each nine for the winning score. Kramer, a recent
Kansas State Wildcat graduate and golfer, also birdied two holes on
each nine including holes one and two to get off to a hot start.
Joe Carter of Leawood used a driver then 4-iron to get on the 6th
hole in two where he proceded to one putt for his first eagle on the
Tour.
In the Players Division it seems
as if Heath Harmon continues to improve with each event he plays.
The Paola native had a 3-under par 33 on the front nine while firing
an even par 72 to take the gross scoring crown and used his
5-under par 67 to tie for top honors in net scoring. Guy
Cannon finished in second place behind Harmon with a gross 2-over
par 74. In net scoring, tying Harmon was Dale Hotop of Lone
Jack. Hotop, a Tour veteran, still holds the StateLine Amateur
Tour net scoring record from when he shot a 13-under par 59 at
Paradise Pointe-The Posse in 2006.
If the Legends Division gross
score winner seems like a repeat from event to event it is very
true. Grant Renne of Prairie Village won his fifth event out
of six today with his even par 72. Right behind Renne was Don
Cox of Lake Quivira with a 1-over par 73. In net scoring Renne,
along with Carl Fisher of Overland Park and Dan Elder of The Village
of Loch Lloyd tied for medalist with an impressive 5-under par 67.
There are 37 spots available for the
next event on Saturday, July 19 at Falcon Lakes Golf Course.
